March 18th 2007
Greetings!
Ahhh, signs of spring: Indian plums and red currants flowering,
alder catkins dangling, a sweet smell in the air. The frogs
have returned to the wetlands and we can hear them croaking
away all night. That is always a hopeful sound for us. It
means we made it through another winter. All the seeds are
ordered and organized in their totes. We have seeded onions,
shallots, leeks, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, artichokes,
and lettuce in the greenhouse. The onions are just starting
to push up through the soil. I even noticed a few tomato sprouts!
Very exciting times!
It has been 3 months since the flood and looking around
you’d hardly know anything happened. Yes, our travel
trailer is upended awaiting demolition, stacks of muddy plastic
crates need washing, and there is still a visible mud-line
on a few buildings, but all and all things are looking…well…normal.
We’ll spend the rest of March getting our tractor implements
ready to do their thing, clean up the worker housing, and
fine-tune our new and improved organizational system in all
the buildings. I tell you, this flood thing is like moving
in all over again. “Where should we put this?”
“How should we use this space?” “Let’s
build more shelves (a little higher this time!)”
Community support is still strong and amazing. We cannot
express often enough how critical the community was (is) in
our flood recovery. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
New CSA memberships are steadily coming in. If you or someone
you know is interested in signing up, there is still space.
Just go to our
registration page to download a form.
Check back for more spring updates.
