REMEMBER, THE CSA POTLUCK IS SUNDAY AUGUST 5TH FROM 4-7.
What a helpless feeling it was to watch all that rain poor
down last week. Not a thing we could do about it. At least
with the heat we could water to compensate, but rain is a
whole different scene. I took a long walk through the fields
last evening and this is what I saw. WEEDS. Lots and lots
of weeds!!!!! They loved the warm, moist conditions. We are
going to have to shift into high gear and break out all the
tools we have-tiller, cultivator, hoes, and hands. Hours and
hours and hours.
The veggies seemed to take it all in stride, though. I was
expecting to find moldy greens, split tomatoes, and lots of
unhappiness, but things are looking as lush as ever. We even
picked a few crates of tomatoes. (Some of you will get them
this week and some next). Go figure. The first tomato harvest
on the heels of the rainiest week!
The potatoes in your box this week are russets. They are still
young and small-not the lunkers you usually see in the grocery
store. They have a dryer, flakier flesh than the Finns or
Reds and are good for baking or mashing.
I forgot to mention the fennel in your box last week. If any
of you were wondering what the heck that bulbous, frilly,
pre-historic looking, licorice smelling thing was, well, that
was fennel. Hopefully you either figured out how to use it
or it is still in good enough condition in your fridge so
you can use it now. (In the future feel free to call or email
about any strange inhabitant of your box.) Fennel is often
used in Italian dishes. All parts are edible. The frilly fronds
can be chopped up into salads. The bulb can be grilled, braised,
added to salad, or chopped up into red sauces for pasta dishes.
Fennel is soothing to the tummy, so munching on some raw after
a meal or if you are feeling unwell, may help. You may only
see it once or twice more over the course of the season. It
is not considered a staple to most people, so we only throw
it in every once in a while to give you something interesting
to play with.
No more shell peas in the box. Tuesday’s picking wasn’t
very abundant and we feel it is time to move on to beans.
The snow peas are still hanging in there, though, so you’ll
get a few of those this week.
I’ve been getting a lot of “what’s my
balance calls”, so to make it easy I am putting a payment
reminder on everyone’s box with an update on what you
owe on your share. If your records differ from mine, please
let me know.
Pickle season is almost here and orders are already rolling
in. If you want some here’s the deal…. We pick

at your CSA site, or at the market. The prices are:
