September 5 ***** Box 12
Hello,
The workday now starts at 6:30 as the sun is taking a little longer to greet us each morning. No one is complaining, I assure you. This time of year is so odd for me. The weather feels like fall. Everyone’s focus seems to be on going back to school. There is a busy-ness and seriousness surrounding most people. But the fields suggest that summer is still here and folks should have a few more potlucks, bar-b-q’ s, and summer parties before the rains set in for good. The harvest is at its peak right now. We got a lot of tomatoes again this week and a ridiculous amount of slicers, so enjoy them.
I heard rumors that there was quite a bit of edemame in the barter box last week. Tsk tsk. Come now, you all should try it. (Do I sound like your mother?) At least we know the barter box is being utilized! There is a little more out there that we may bring to market soon, so you’ll have another chance.
This is onion-curing time. They have sized up beautifully and need to be pulled out of the ground so the skins can dry for storage. We pulled most of the onions and shallots last week hoping that it would be dry enough long enough to field cure them. (We lay them all out in the field to dry in the delightful Washington summer sun-ha!) Most years this works like a charm and we can leave them out there drying until we have time to clip, clean, and bag them. But some years, this being one of them, rain of some sort is inevitable and we have to haul in as many as we can into covered space to finish curing and cover the remainder with plastic. When the moisture passes we will uncover them until they are ready. Supposedly more sun is forecasted so we may be all right.
It has been brought to my attention that small shares haven’t gotten eggplant yet and here I go prattling on and on about eggplant recipes. Well this is your week small shares. Sorry for the oversight!
A note on corn: The next corn planting is not on yet so we combed through the old patch for the last stragglers. They are not perfect ears by any means, but still tasty. Some are full only halfway down or have other oddities about them. Just letting you know that WE know the corn looks funky and that better corn is on the horizon!
CANNING QUANTITIES- Call or email with an order. We can leave stuff with your CSA box, bring it to the Olympia market Thurs-Sun, or you can come on out to the farm.
TOMATOES: We will be having 20# boxes of “seconds” tomatoes for $1.75/lb (that’s $35) fairly regularly.
PICKLING CUKES: I know last week I said we don’t have many, well guess I was wrong. We had a HUGE harvest yesterday and we have about 250# of mediums, 60# of smalls, and 30# of mini’s in the cooler just waiting for you….I dare not project next week’s harvest so if this week doesn’t work for you but you want to put your name on a list I can call you Friday or next Tuesday and let you know what we have. But of course this Thursday of Friday would be ideal!
